Section 1. The Good Earth Farm CSA
Becoming a Part of Our Farm
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) offers a relationship between the farm, the farmers, and you as a food buyer. Rather than simply purchasing food, our customers become “members” of the farm who receive a portion of the farm’s harvest and have a deeper connection to the farmers who grow their food and the land on which it is grown. This is a season-long commitment between farmer and eater.
Good Earth Farm’s Summer Season CSA is estimated to run for 20 weeks, usually from mid June to mid-late October. Our Autumn Season is in November and December.
Members are responsible for showing up at their chosen pick-up site during the season to pick up their share of freshly harvested produce. Detailed information regarding pick-up is discussed below in Section 3.
The quantity in each share varies with the seasons. Early in the season expect your share to be lighter with the vegetables of spring and early summer. By mid/late summer the summer fruiting crops appear and add more variety to the share. Autumn shares reflect what is happening in the fields, and bring root and frost hardy crops. There will be plenty of those vegetables that you are familiar with plus some that are new and unique to your table. Variety and quantity may vary as described below in Section 2.
We grow using methods that are safe for our family and our community. That extends well beyond us as human beings and engulfs our entire environment. Since we first started farming we’ve used only sustainable, conscientious, and natural methods. We would not grow produce any other way. Besides following our own strict standards, we follow the USDA National Organic Program standards and are Certified Organic (GMOs are NOT allowed in Certified Organic production.)
The Products We Expect
During each week of the Mid-West’s peak growing season, you’ll receive a variety of fresh seasonal produce from the farm *. You will have the opportunity to try numerous varieties of vegetables, including some herbs and fruits. Different times of the growing season offer different types of vegetables. A list of the produce you may see in your weekly share and the time of the season you’ll receive it is on our produce page. *(A few crops a year are purchased from other local farms. Usually sweet corn is one of them. It is non-gmo, but it is not organic. If we purchase an off-farm crop that is not organic, we will let you know in our newsletter.)
Sharing in the Risk of Crop Failure
We are experienced farmers, and we promise to do our best to provide you with a bountiful share each week. The quantity of produce, however, may vary from week-to-week due to extreme weather, insects, or other production factors despite our best efforts.
By joining our CSA, you are agreeing to share the risk of crop failure with us and other members. In the unlikely event of a crop failure, our procedure is as follows: If only a small portion of crops fail, we compensate for the failed crops by filling your share with other crops grown on the farm that are ready for harvest at that time. Or, we may cover for a crop loss by buying from another farmer who has similar growing methods. This may not always be a feasible option because of cost or widespread failure. If a large portion of crops happen to fail, we may not be able to deliver any product in some weeks.
Sharing in the Reward of Crop Surplus
When crops are especially abundant, we pack as much as possible into your share. However, we are conscious of ‘veggie overload’ and don’t want to overwhelm our members or deliver so much produce that it goes to waste.
Section 3. Picking up Shares
You are responsible for observing our pick-up site rules, which are as follows:
- For pre-packed box pick-up sites: Bring your own bags or containers and leave the farm box at the site. We take the safety of your food seriously. By leaving the farm box at the site, it ensures that the box is only used for produce.
- For veggie buffet pick-up sites: Bring your own bags or containers to pack your share into.
- It is your responsibility to pick up your share during your site’s scheduled hours on Thursdays. The farm will not issue credit for unclaimed or forgotten shares. Unless other arrangements have been made ahead of time, produce that is not picked up during the site’s scheduled hours will be distributed or donated.
- Share pick-ups that offer pre-packed boxes are self-serve and on the honor system. Your site will be open during the scheduled hours, but your site host will not necessarily be at home.
- Off-farm pick-up sites do not have refrigeration so timely pick-up will ensure the integrity of your produce.
- If you are unable to pick up your share on delivery day, make arrangements for your produce ahead of time.
- A few options: ask someone else to pick up your share to experience the joys of CSA, ask the farm to not pack a share for you that week (we may donate the share or put extra in the swap boxes), or ask your site host to hold your share for a later pick-up that day (not applicable at all sites). Site hosts are not expected to hold produce overnight.
- If choosing to have someone pick up your share, you are responsible for explaining the pick-up location and procedures to your substitute. Please make sure your substitute knows which are the correct items to take.
- We also offer the option of rescheduling or putting a share “on hold” (up to 2 times a season). This means cancelling a share for a certain week and getting a replacement share a different week. (If you get a weekly share, this would mean receiving 2 shares in 1 week. EOW shares can choose an off-week to get their replacement share.) A one week notice prior to the week you are cancelling is needed for this option. More details on this option will be in the “Holds” page of your CSA account.
Section 4. Refunds
Membership in our CSA is a commitment to purchase and receive vegetables for an entire growing season. We generally do not offer refunds once the season has begun. The reason for this is really at the heart of Community Supported Agriculture, where members (that’s you!) make an upfront investment in a farmer’s growing season. Having these funds early in the year is vital to operations on the farm, ensuring that we can deliver beautiful, fresh produce to our members throughout the seasons. This trusting relationship makes CSA different from a simple produce delivery service.
We will, however, consider exceptions on a case-by-case basis. A $25 administrative fee will be deducted from any refund issued.
Section 5. Communicating with Us
Our main means of communication with you is email. The best ways for you to reach us is either email or phone. We will do our best to respond as soon as possible when you contact us, but please understand that we spend most of our time in the field growing your food and not at our desk.
When you sign up, you will be added to our contact list. Please read your email from us, this is one of your responsibilities as a GEF CSA member. We depend on being able to communicate important information such as necessary changes to your delivery schedule, our weekly newsletter The ComPost, and other relevant information that you, as a CSA member, will need to know.
Good communication goes both ways. We appreciate your feedback and hope you’ll contact us with any changes to your email address and any comments about your pick-up site or produce share. Thank you!
