Worker Shares

What is a worker share?

A worker share works on the farm in exchange for a produce share or part of a produce share. Some of the reasons people choose a worker share are to help offset some of the cost of their share or have time connecting with the farm that grows their food.

Worker shares are an important part of the farm and we rely on the commitment a worker share makes to help us get the farm work done.

The worker share opportunity should not be taken lightly. We have high expectations for our crew and worker shares.  The jobs are often demanding, physical, and labor intensive.

Worker Share Options

Worker shares work 4 hours each time they come to the farm. We understand that people are busy and may not be able to commit to a full worker share which is 20 times at the farm. Members, however, may be available for a partial worker share option which is why we offer several options:

  • 5 times at the farm (20 hours) = deduct $160 from a produce share
  • 10 times at the farm (40 hours) = deduct $320 from a produce share
  • 15 times at the farm (60 hours) = deduct $480 from a produce share
  • 20 times at the farm (80 hours) = deduct $640 from a produce share

Each time at the farm is 4 hours. Worker shares are scheduled one time per week. Worker shares can choose any weeks beginning June 11 and going through October 27, 2018. Weeks do not need to be consecutive.

Why be a Worker Share?

We think the farm is a wonderful place to be and work. We’re serious about the work we do and we work hard, but we have fun while we work. We laugh. We tell stories. We stop to look at cool insects and awesome birds.  But we mainly work while we work.  We find joy in this work that feeds people and gets done by our hands. We also value a job well done. If you share this work ethic, you’ll be respected and appreciated here.

Our Standards

During our time farming we’ve worked with many people.  Most have been effective, fulfilled workers, and several have even returned year after year to work with us. But we’ve had a few workers who were not cut out for doing the kind of work we do.

Below we’ve listed qualities which distinguish successful from unsuccessful workers.  These are the standards by which we judge potential workers.  We’re disclosing them not to be insensitive, but to be clear about what we expect.  Please read and understand our standards before you apply to the farm as a worker share.

  • You must be able to do repetitive physical work outdoors in all kinds of weather: including cold, heat, rain, etc. Good physical condition is necessary for the work we do. You must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Your body must tolerate bending, kneeling, crouching, and sitting on the ground for extended periods.
  • You must work thoroughly and carefully.  We are particular.  Our quality standards are meticulous.
  • At the same time, you must be quick and efficient.  Time is money and money keeps the farm going.
  • You must communicate and cooperate with your co-workers and have a good attitude. We will not tolerate people who don’t respect their work and their co-workers. If you’re lazy, rude, or disrespectful, you won’t work here.
  • Experience is not needed.  We’ve had many folks come here with no experience growing vegetables who have been amazing!
  • Ultimately, know that we are flexible and understanding.  We recognize and appreciate human differences, and we’ve worked happily alongside many different types of people.

When does work begin? 

That depends. After applying to do a worker share and being accepted you will make an agreement with the farmer on the dates you will commit to coming to the farm to fulfil your worker share. We make arrangements with other crew members and worker shares around your chosen dates, so we expect that you will stick to that schedule.

Choosing a day and time

Worker shares commit to a day and shift and work that same day and shift for the agreed upon number of times throughout the season.

Shift options:

  • Mondays: 7:30 to 11:30
  • Tuesdays: 7:30 to 11:30
  • Wednesdays : 7:30 to 11:30  (Packing Shed worker shares needed on this day! No field work.)
  • Thursdays: 7:30 to 11:30 FULL
  • Fridays: 7:30 to 11:30

Worker share options are limited and some days/shifts fill up faster than others. Certain days we are in need of more help than others. Mondays, Tuesday, and Wednesdays are very busy days.  If you have no preference, please choose one of those three days.  If you prefer indoor, less physical work, then Wednesday is your day!

Type of Work

Weeding, harvesting, washing, sorting, and packing vegetables are examples of some of the work we do.  You might regularly do one specific job or a variety of jobs. Work might be in a group or done independently. The type of work you do on the farm will depend on your abilities and what needs to be done.

Children are not allowed to accompany you during your worker share shift. The farm offers many opportunities for families to come and experience the farm. We encourage you to take advantage of those events. Pets are not allowed.


Everyone who works on the farm is expected to be on time. Please arrive early enough before your scheduled start time to allow yourself a few minutes to get situated—5 minutes is enough for most people. Starting on time is expected and appreciated.

Missing Work

Are you going on vacation?  Is there a day you know you’ll be missing? Perhaps you have an appointment and need to leave a little early.  You must tell the farm at least 2 weeks prior to the missed shift or missed hours. In order to honor the worker share agreement you will need to make up your missed time. It is possible that you can work an alternate day that week or another week in the season.  If you need to leave an hour early one week for an appointment, you can make up that hour by staying an hour longer your following shift.

If you are ill or if something unexpected occurs and you cannot come to the farm, please call the farm as soon as possible to let us know.

You cannot send another person in your place unless this has been previously approved with the farmer.

Worker Share Deposit

A $50 deposit is required to be a worker share. The deposit is due at your worker share interview on the farm.

The full deposit will be returned or credited to you for the next season if you honor the worker share agreement. Honoring the worker share agreement means no late arrivals, no unexcused absences, hours made up by the end of the current season, etc. (see worker share agreement).


A worker share is a serious commitment to the farm and the farmers.  Please consider seriously if you can keep the worker share commitment prior to agreeing.  We need reliable people willing to come to the farm weekly for the entire season.  Can you keep this commitment?

  • What do you see as your greatest weakness?
  • Tell us about yourself. What do you do? (employment, hobbies, etc.)
  • Which Worker Share option are you interested in: 5, 10, 15, or 20 times on the farm?
  • Which day of the week and shift would you like to work? Please list two options in order of preference. If only one day/shift works for you, please state that.

We will be in contact with you within a week of receiving your email.  If you are accepted, we will send you our Worker Share Agreement.
